Leading roofing and cladding company Thornton Roofing recently completed works on the STEM building at the University of Surrey; a 3000m² structure commissioned by Gilbert Ash Ltd. for STEM students at the university.
An innovative, modern design by STW architects, the building incorporates flexible super-labs as well as formal teaching spaces, social learning environments, offices and seminar rooms.
With an estimated project value of approx. £350,000, Antrim-based Thornton Roofing maximised the functionality of this design concept with the use of Kingspan 150 mm QuadCore Karrier panels fixed to a concrete base via tophats. Thornton Roofing selected this high-performance building solution as it provides a weathertight building envelope as well as enhanced fire resistance, in a fraction of the time required by other systems on the market. As a result, Thornton Roofing’s team were able to remove the façade from the critical path of the build programme; maximising on site efficiency and labour costs.
Thornton Roofing’s well-established expertise in fitting all types of panels within time constraints allowed them to undertake this new type of Rainscreen project and deliver an aesthetically-pleasing, high-quality finished product.
John Walshe, Estimator at Thornton Roofing commented:
“Thornton’s work on the new STEM building is a perfect example of a scholastic building which is not only aesthetically pleasing and modern, but also highly functional for its service users. Our combined years of expertise in roofing and cladding meant that the structure was completed on time, to high standards in line with the brief. We are all extremely pleased with the results”.
